HISTORY OF NOW BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

Now Build Relationships (NBR) was established in 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa, driven by a vision to uplift and support local communities. The organisation's founding was rooted in a desire to address the social and economic challenges faced by underprivileged groups by leveraging a wide array of community-driven initiatives.

In its formative years, NBR focused on youth camps, mentorship programmes, and community upliftment projects. These activities created safe and nurturing environments where young individuals could develop life skills, confidence, and resilience. Recognising the power of the arts as a transformative tool, NBR expanded its focus to include arts and music programmes, offering creative outlets for self-expression and personal growth.

Over the past 15 years, more than 100,000 young people from areas such as Mitchell’s Plain, Gugulethu, Langa, Bonteheuwel, and surrounding communities have benefited from NBR’s programmes.

For more than 15 years, NBR has also run the Dress for Success initiative, providing school uniforms and essential support to learners from disadvantaged communities. While the programme is now sustained through sponsorship and partnerships, it began through one of NBR’s early music initiatives known as Kings and Priests, where community music events were used to raise funds for school children.

In 2019, NBR formalised a partnership with the Mitchell's Plain Music Academy (MPMA), marking a significant milestone in its history. Together, the organisations have provided music education and workshops to underprivileged communities, empowering youth with artistic and technical skills. This collaboration has enriched the lives of many young individuals by equipping them with opportunities for artistic exploration and career development.

NBR has also contributed to high-profile national events. In both 2021 and 2022, it successfully hosted workshops alongside Miss South Africa events. These workshops integrated music and dance performances for contestants and dignitaries, including Members of Parliament, while imparting life skills to youth in attendance. This unique initiative highlighted NBR's capacity to blend community development with cultural and social outreach.

Today, NBR remains steadfast in its mission to build relationships, strengthen communities, and transform lives through its diverse and impactful programmes.
